RESUMO

Abstract L-Malic acid is the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient of the latest generation of compound electrolyte injection (STEROFUNDIN ISO, Germany) and plays a very important role in the rescue of critically ill patients. The optical purity of L-malic acid is a Critical Quality Attributes. A new reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method for pre-column derivatization of D-malic acid enantiomer impurity in L-malic acid bulk drug was established. The derivatization reaction was carried out using (R)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine ((R)-NEA) as a chiral derivatization reagent. The Kromasil C18 column was used with a detection wavelength of 225 nm, a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min-1, and a column temperature of 30 °C. The mobile phase was acetonitrile-0.01 mol·L-1 potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution (containing 20 mmol·L-1 sodium heptanesulfonate, adjusted to pH 2.80 with phosphoric acid) (at a ratio of 45:55) and the resolution of D-malic acid and L-malic acid derivatization products reached 1.7. The proposed method possesses the advantages of simple operation, mild conditions, stable derivatization products and low cost. Also it gave better separation and was more accurate than previous methods

This work consists of a research carried out on the use of irrigating liquids by dental surgeons in the city of Itabuna-BA. For this, the following problem was defined: what are the choices of irrigating liquids in endodontic treatments in order to promote a total disinfection of the root canals? And as a general objective, elucidate about the choices of dentists located in the city of Itabuna-Bahia in relation to the substances used as adjuvants in endodontic treatment during the irrigation stage. The research had a qualitative approach and the questionnaire was used with 100 dentists in the selected city. This questionnaire consisted of eight questions, including which irrigant was used and the percentage of it. Regarding the results, it can be said that in endodontic treatment, sodium hypochlorite remains the irrigating solution of choice among professionals, different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite solutions are used during biomechanical preparation by endodontists and general practitioners who practice endodontics, there is no unanimity as to the choice, no agreement exists regarding their ideal concentration(AU)

RESUMO

Background: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a topical sialogogue spray (malic acid, 1%) in the treatment of xerostomia in patients with chronic Graft versus Host Disease (cGVHD). Material and Methods: This study was designed as a randomized double-blind clinical study. Twenty-eight patients with cGVHD suffering from xerostomia were divided into 2 groups: the first group (14 patients) received a topical sialagogue spray containing malic acid 1% (SalivAktive(R)) whereas the second group (14 patients) received a placebo. Both groups received treatment for 2 weeks. Dry Mouth Questionnaire (DMQ) scores and unstimulated salivary flows rate were collected before and after treatment. Results: DMQ scores increased significantly from 1.3 ± 0.4 to 3.5 ± 0.4 points (p<0.05) after two weeks of treat-ment with malic acid, whereas in the control group DMQ scores increased from 1.2 ± 0.7 points to 1.4 ± 0.6 (p>0.05). The unstimulated salivary flow rate in patients treated with malic acid increased significantly from 0.15 ± 0.06 mL/min to 0.24± 0.08 mL/min, while that of the patients treated with placebo went from 0.16 ± 0.07 mL/ min to 0.17 ± 0.09 mL/min (p>0.05). Conclusions: Malic acid 1% spray can be considered effective in the treatment of GVHD induced xerostomia

RESUMO

Objetives: Assessing the clinical effectiveness of a topical sialogogue on spray (malic acid, 1%) in the treatment of xerostomia induced by antihypertensive drugs. Study design: This research has been carried out through a randomized double-blind clinical trial. 45 patients suffering from hypertensive drugs-induced xerostomia were divided into 2 groups: the first group (25 patients) received a topical sialogogue on spray (malic acid, 1%) whereas the second group (20 patients) received a placebo. Both of them were administered on demand for 2 weeks. Dry Mouth Questionnaire (DMQ) was used in order to evaluate xerostomia levels before and after product/placebo application. Unstimulated and stimulated salivary flows rates, before and after application, were measured. All the statistical analyses were performed by using SPSS software v17.0. Different DMQ scores at the earliest and final stage of the trial were analysed by using Mann-Whitney U test, whereas Student's T-test was used to analyse salivary flows. Critical p-value was established at p<0.05. Results: DMQ scores increased significantly (clinical recovery) from 1.21 to 3.36 points (p<0.05) after malic acid (1%) application whereas DMQ scores increased from 1.18 to 1.34 points (p>0.05) after placebo application. After two weeks of treatment with malic acid, unstimulated salivary flow increased from 0.17 to 0.242 mL/min whereas the stimulated one increased from 0.66 to 0.92 mL/min (p<0.05). After placebo application unstimulated flow ranged from 0.152 to 0.146 mL/min and stimulated flow increased from 0.67 to 0.70 mL/min (p>0.05). Conclusions: Malic acid 1% spray improved antihypertensive-induced xerostomia and stimulated the production of saliva (AU)
